In fact, I’m not quite sure when exactly I woke up to make healthier choices, but probably the single biggest boost was a few months of natural health care studies. Admittedly, I’ve been reading magazines and books relating to healthy life before, but like I am sure many others, I have imagined that I have eaten healthy and blindly relied on western medicine.
After all, I have trained in the medicare sector and also have taken courses to guide healthy food choices. In other words, I have imagined knowing everything possible about healthy nutrition, physical activity, and health promotion. But what happened?
During my studies, I came across the book written by a famous American neurologist David Perlmutter: Grain Brain – The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers. When I read the book, I made an important discovery. I found my bowels, which I’ve spent my whole life neglecting and battering. Don’t laugh, that discovery revolutionized my life and put all the things I’ve studied in nutrition before in a whole new light.
I realized that if those things that Perlmutter have been studied and written were correct, the nutrition recommendations taught to me and those made by THL (Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare) were completely flawed. Based on those facts in Perlmutter’s book, I began to suspect that I too might have a leaky gut. So I decided to put those facts to the test and follow the three-week gluten-free and low-carbohydrate diet in the book, which he said would defragment and correct the intestines.
I was initially a little skeptical, but already a week later I found my general feeling to be much better. The stomach did not swell after eating and I didn’t become tired after eating. There was no flatulence, my thinking was much brighter and the energy level remained constant throughout the day. In the evening came a normal, healthy feeling of fatigue and a night of deep and restful sleep. I could work more efficiently during the day and hunger was never bothered. My blood pressure went down, and I could relinquish of the antihypertensive pills.
It should be noted that my husband, who originally went on that test with some reluctance, noticed similar positive changes in his health. So we decided to stick to the gluten-free and low-carbon diet even after the test has ended. The extra plus was that my weight dropped by more than five kilos (about 11 pounds) during the summer months. I really didn’t count the calories and ate good and tasty food.
As my sick leave prolonged, I was reminded of despair from the future when I could not find any replacement work in my former job or from the city either. The municipal pension insurance company did not qualify for my health care studies, and in the midst of all hopelessness, I fell again on an unhealthy diet. Lots of carbs, regular bread, and all kind of junk food. I noticed that my general feeling was getting worse again, my stomach was whimsy, and my weight got up. The days passed like in the fog and the sleep was intermittent. All the old troubles returned with joint and abdominal pain and all the headaches.
Well, things finally got out and I got back to my former work community and started paying attention to my diet again. So I returned to the path indicated by Perlmutter, and both my physical and mental condition began to improve.
Several studies prove that our intestines have our second brains. Common sense says that if you treat your brain badly, you end up bad. So I decided that I would like to share information on healthier food choices on this site.
